Who is Gladys?
My name is Mary Tufts, and I live in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
In early 2007 I first heard about land right down the street in Middleboro being sold to build a casino, and knew the problems a casino would create weren't going to stop short at the town border.
Aside from voting, I'd never participated in government, so I didn't know what to expect when I went to Middleboro town hall to sit in on an informational meeting about the casino - but I didn't expect to hear an attorney, who claimed to be an expert in tribal law, telling everyone that it was all over. To give up and sign on the dotted line.
That didn't seem right to me. It didn't even seem American to me.
I heard a lot of pros and cons of expanded gambling that night, and over the next few years, but most of the things I learned scared me. Witnessing the process scared me more. So I guess I just decided to stop being scared, and start fighting.
I met a lot of fantastic (and not so fantastic) people along the way, and became part of grassroots movement to preserve quality of life, kick corporate influence out of politics, and rid government of it's gambling addiction.

I am very disappointed in this organization. It has been proven to fight this type of fight, you need to get dirty. You guys just shriveled up and disappeared. You should have drawn the association of Brunelle, Bond, Perkins, crooked Cop Gates and the liar/convicted rapist Marshall. You should have found out if the FBI is asking those clowns any questions in relation to Marshall, then exploited it. Never let it out of the front page view of people. Posters with their heads on it reading "In Good Faith?" Marshall committed a federal crime by testifying in front of Congress of his alleged military career. There have been many people who have died on the battle field with no recognition for that scumbags rights. You should have associated the agreement, promises, and future of that land with Marshall and the idiots who made that agreement. We have lost. Now, the only hope is that someone will outbid the backing investors for one of licenses. I hope the owner of the Raynham dog track gets one.
First, I'd like you to know that I appreciate all suggestions for future blogs. Some of my best stuff has been inspired by others. But blogging is very easy and if you have good ideas you’d like to expound upon, you should consider doing it.
Second, I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment in our organization, but I want to assure you that we have far from having shriveled and disappeared. We have been working tirelessly behind the scenes on many fronts. I do not always reflect those things in this blog. But it doesn’t mean they aren’t getting done.
Third, putting “I’m with Stupid” T-shirts on selectmen is about the extent of my ‘getting dirty.’ And I think this organization, unlike others, can be proud of that. I would STRONGLY suggest that you contact some professional journalists, or investigative bloggers, who are always on the lookout for good material for a story, if you have some information to share. They can check it out in ways I cannot. Just look at what that great sleuth, Peter Kenney was able to dig up on Glenn Marshall.
Fourth, ask yourself what it is that you have done to help keep a casino out of Middleboro. Have you attended a CFO meeting, joined a committee, volunteered, made a donation? Have you written to the governor or your reps? We consider your time and efforts extremely valuable. Before you throw in the towel, and before you accuse my organization of sitting on the sidelines, consider what it is you can do for the cause. It’s amazing the difference one person can make in this effort.
And fifth, if you think you won’t be negatively by a casino in Raynham, you need to catch up on your research.

Much has been accomplished which I'm sorry you haven't noticed.
Gladys' response was on target. NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is to be gained from 'fighting dirty.'
More than that, grassroots campaigning begins with the willingness of voters to work for the election of their candidate. Did you call and offer to make phone calls, knock on doors, register voters, or do a multitude of other things?
The Town's Union Employees were making calls, posting lawn signs and active early in the campaign.
Do you think they had a vested interest in preserving their contracts? Do you think that the town can continue to hire and fund at a level that exceeds revenues without future layoffs, like Bridgewater?
Did you notice the news blackout? or the slanted coverage? Freedom of the press? Think again after you look at who owns all of the local papers.
Each of us has to examine our own participation. Were you involved?

The biggest losers are the people who sat home, and didn't even bother to show up. Too many people are willing to let others fight their battles... and take the heat... for them. Then, they are the first to criticize when the results aren't what they wanted.
Unfortunately, the vast majority who don't go to town meeting, or vote at the polls, seal the fate of the rest of us with their apathy.
When this is all said and done, no matter when that may be, at least we will know that we 1)fought the fight worth fighting and 2) we fought fairly.
Casinofacts.org exists to illustrate the negative effects of CASINOS. We do not seek to "dig up dirt" on individuals.
As I am not a director of the orgainzation, I may be overstepping my bounds here but there have been many things which we could have done to which would have been construed as either "diry" or inappropriate, such as placing a float in the July 4th parade. Though I did not make the decision to not twist the parade into a political statement, I am proud of casinofacts for making it.
There are many out there who would like to see us portrayed as rabid, narrow minded liars because of our opposition to the casino.
Anyone who has attended a meeting or become involved with casinofacts knows the truth.
I am proud and honored to belong to such an orgainzation.
I think Wayne says it all concerning casinofacts....I cannot and will not comment on the recall because I am not a citizen of Middleboro and can't even pretend to know the half of it...BUT, I will say that as an outsider looking in, there are some serious issues with Middleboro town government.
Anti-casino constituents, especially those who post on casinofacts are already being accused of being "rabid" and playing dirty. Again I say to those individuals (you know who you are)...look at the pot calling the kettle black. God forbid people like Gladys here poke fun at all this nonsense....a little comic relief is needed or else we would all be as bitter and angry and rude as some...as far as fighting dirty?? I haven't seen it with this organization, nor do I expect to. Your right Wayne, people do know the truth!
According to news reports of Govenor Deval Patrick's proposed casino legislation, each casino host community will be required to hold a referendum vote on allowing a casino in their community.
Middleboro will be required to hold another referendum vote on the casino question. As it should have in the first place.
This vote will not be centered around a dubious financial agreement with the tribe. Take the money out of the equation and answer truthfully, do you want a casino in Middleboro?
I think that question was answered at Town Meeting in July with a NO vote on the non-binding question on the warrant.
This time when we vote, it will be a day long event so everybody who wants to vote will have a chance.
We haven't lost anything because it seems the fight is still ongoing!
